Coverage for Rental Cars

One of the most common questions we receive from clients is…am I covered under my auto insurance for rental cars? While the answer is yes in most cases, we recommend our clients buy physical damage through the rental car company.  You may ask why? The long and short of it is that when you damage a rental car they will charge you for the damage, the loss of use of that rental and even diminished value.  If you purchase their coverage, it wouldn’t go on your auto insurance and make your rates increase. Not only that, but you could basically walk away without going thru the whole process of filing the claim on your own coverage.

Another thing to consider is if the rental is used for business purposes.  In most cases, if it’s for business use, it wouldn’t be covered under your personal auto policy.  If you don’t have comprehensive or collision coverage on your current auto policy, then it wouldn’t apply on a rental car either.  So, there are several things to keep in mind when renting a car. For those that want extra peace of mind, you can also go to https://www.insuremyrentalcar.com and get a quote for car rental insurance.  In most cases, this can be less than what you can get at the rental car counter.  (Please check the States where available).
